Watching a rerun of "Judging Amy" and enjoying the performances of Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless, two of my favorite actresses.
I loved the strong characters they played as "Cagney and Lacey" and I love them for being the strong, real women they are in real life. They allowed themselves to age naturally rather than enduring botox injections, horrific diets in order to stay abnormally thin, and plastic surgery that eventually starts making a person look like they could appear as an extra in a zombie film without makeup. In an industry that prefers plastic people, particularly plastic women, they are real. And that's what makes their characters come across as genuine. Tyne's "Maxine Gray" and Sharon's "Debbie Novotny" seem like people you might really know. They dare to play mothers and working women rather than overaged sexpots seducing younger men.
On that note, I do love Joan Collins too. But she's a force of nature. She remained young looking long past the time she should have, and apparently with very few cosmetic procedures. Joan is fun to watch. She's reportedly a nice lady who made her living playing bitchy characters. Gay guys just love her too. The characters she plays are kind of caricatures. And that's the beauty of Joan Collins. Sometimes you have to go over the top to be fabulous! But yet Joan isn't one of today's plastic perfect people. She takes her imperfections and plays them up to make her one of a kind.
And then you have Cher. She's had plastic surgery, she wears too much makeup and she's unnaturally thin. But Cher is truly a fine actress and a genuinely good person. Her sweetness comes through as does a sense of insecurity. She doesn't think she's better than anyone else. She goes a bit overboard on the cosmetics and cosmetic procedures in an effort to be as good as everybody else. And if you've ever seen her perform onstage, Cher is fabulous. Her look may be over the top but there's nothing fake about her personality.
My secret is that I always did enjoy acting. Maybe someday I'll go back to doing little theatre.
